TrustMe is a name used by artist Ross Liew for work he has made since 1999. TrustMe became known for extensive paste-up activity throughout the Auckland city fringe and after linking up with likeminded artists, formed the Cut Collective in 2003. A crew of artists all focussed on using the street as the primary site for their work, they were the leading figures in Auckland’s street art scene of the 2000’s. The work of TrustMe originally centred around points of discomfort in the topical discourse of the day, often employing nostalgic references to the passing of popular culture. An enduring attraction to typography and text as a means of initiating public dialogue resulted in the creation of work that sought to speak to the audience. These days in a climate in which there is no shortage of chatter, messaging and platforms he feels there isn’t the need for one more voice in the mix. The typographic influence is still present though heavily abstracted and broken down. He feels by saying nothing he is saying plenty.
