Freestyle - Skate Deck Group Show
Limn Gallery presents 'FREESTYLE'. FREESTYLE Kicked off at 7pm Friday the 14th of April until the 30th of April 2023. ‘FREESTYLE’ exhibited 42 original artworks on skateboard decks, 13 sculptures, and a series of photographs by award winning photographer, Petra Leary. In total there were 52 New Zealand contemporary and urban artists exhibiting in the show.
About the Show:
This unique and dynamic showcase of creativity is a celebration of the intersection of skateboarding and art, two distinct forms of self-expression that have long been intertwined. FREESTYLE aims to highlight the unique ways in which artists have interpreted the relationship between these two forms of expression.
Each skate deck in the show is a canvas for the artist to express their own unique style, techniques and perspectives, resulting in a diverse and eclectic collection of pieces. From vibrant colours to intricate designs, from street art to abstract expressionism, FREESTYLE will inspire and engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you're a seasoned skateboarder or simply appreciate the beauty of art, this exhibition promises to be a visual feast that will leave you inspired.

Petra's work features a simple yet bold arrangement and composition that belies her deeply honed technical skills and iconoclastic eye for pop culture. Petra showcased a collection of 10 drone photographs and collage work featuring local skate parks from around New Zealand.

For Freestyle, Ghostcat aka Mike Beer created unique, large stone skate wheels in collaboration with eleven New Zealand artists, and a Ghsotcat x Ikarus miniature skate ramp. Each wheel has a hole on the back that can be hung on the wall, or stand alone on a desk or shelf. Size: 200mm diameter x 80mm deep

Def Apparel
We teamed up with Chey Ataria, who is the founder of Def Skateboards to have a collection of DEF tees and hoddies that were sold for the duration of the show. All displayed on our custom skate ramp that we built in the middle of the gallery.
