Seen is a American street artist best known for his graffiti works which covered MTA train cars along the New York subway system during the 1970s. Characterized by bright block letters and cartoonish depictions of human figures, the artist’s paintings and tattoos are influenced by comic books and television shows. Born Richard Mirando in 1961 in the Bronx, NY, he first began spray painting in 1973, alongside his graffiti crew United Artists. By the early 1980s, Seen had transitioned to work on canvas and began participating in shows alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
In the late 1980s Seen also turned his talent to Tattoo art, opening Tattoo SEEN, which quickly became one of the most successful studios in New York. Seen's recent work includes three-dimensional sculpture, mixed media work with reclaimed or discarded materials (often found in the street), and a series of hand-painted, limited-edition MTA New York subway maps.
He continues to exhibit worldwide and produce work with and alongside artists such as Banksy. Recognised by his peers as the "Godfather of Graffiti", Seen is one of today's most famous graffiti artist and his influence is unprecedented.
